Gallbladder Cancer Causes Stages Symptoms Treatment

Gallbladder Cancer

Cancer is the growth of abnormal cells uncontrollably anywhere in the body. These cells penetrate into the different parts of the body and causes cell damage. The damage of the tissue of the specified body part is identified as the particular cell tissue cancer. There are almost 100 types of cancers that affect humans. One such cancer is Gallbladder which is very rare and not a common cancer. It occurs due to the building up of gallstones, which also leads to gallbladder calcification known as porcelain gallbladder. It is the sixth most common gastrointestinal cancer. There are many causes and signs and symptoms and treatment details mentioned in the article to know about the Gallbladder cancer in detail.

Causes of gallbladder cancer

While the accurate reasons for the cause of the disease are unknown, there are some factors which increase the risk of the development of the cancer cells.
There are many causes of gallbladder cancer like
Age and sex: Gallbladder cancer is more common in people above 70 age and mostly for the women.
Ethnicity: Based on the geographic locations it may vary due to various factors. Those areas include Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and Asia. Low rates were found in some other parts of the world like USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and some western European countries along with Mediterranean countries.

Gallstones and inflammation: Gallstones and inflammation of the gallbladder are the most common high- risk factors of gallbladder cancer. Gallstones are hard substances formed in the gallbladder with a mixture of cholesterol and the substances found in the bile duct.

Heredity: There are 5 times more chances for the development of gallbladder if the family had such a history.

Abnormalities in Pancreas and bile duct: If you are born with abnormalities in the pancreas and bile duct, there is a chance of gallbladder cancer occurrence. Along with these causes, there are many other factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, infection and many other.

How Is Gallbladder Cancer Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of Gallbladder cancer is quite difficult as these symptoms overlap with gallstones and biliary colic. Transabdominal ultrasound, MRI, Computed Tomography (CT) scan, laparoscopic or endoscopic ultrasound and MR Cholangio-pancreatography are used to diagnose the disease. To know the growth of the tumor either malignant or not, there is only a certain way, biopsy. Sometimes your medical history may help diagnose the disease, but it is quite difficult, as some other tests also have to be done to confirm the disease.

Stages of gallbladder cancer

Various stages describe the position of the cancer cells like where it is located, is it affecting other parts of the body or is it spreading rapidly. To know the exact stage of the cancer helps the doctor to provide accurate medical care to help reduce the tumor cells. There are, in general four stages of any gallbladder cancer like stage 1, 2, 3 and 4 (a and b).
Stage 1: The initial stage of the cancer where the cancer cells are detected as it is present in the gallbladder.
Stage 2: When the tumor extends to the peri-muscular connective tissue, but has not spread outside, then it is staged as a second phase. If the tumor is detected even in this stage, the patient is out of fear, as it can be treated.
Stage 3: The cancer is said to be in stage 3 when the tumor spreads beyond the gallbladder, but not affected to lymph nodes or arteries. The treatment of the cancer cells is quite tough and needs continuous observation of the doctors.
Stage 4a: In this stage, the tumor spreads to the lymph nodes and arteries, but not to the distant body organs. The cancer is far beyond for the treatment.
Stage 4b: In this stage, the tumor spreads to the distant body parts like lower abdomen and backbone. This is the final stage of the cancer and have no option left for the treatment.
Early diagnosis of the cancer cells can cure the patient in most of the cases. But if the patient does not respond to the treatment, then it is hard for the physicians to cure the treatment.

ORAL CANCER

Symptoms of gallbladder cancer

The symptoms or signs are not present until the last stages of the gallbladder cancer. If present, they may include Jaundice, Fever, Nausea and vomiting, pain above the stomach, lumps in the abdomen and bloating. Anorexia, jaundice and weight loss indicate more advanced stages of the disease. When you trigger with these signs do not hesitate to consult your physician. In some cases there may be early signs of the symptoms of the gallbladder cancer.

Treatment for gallbladder cancer

If the cancer causing cells are detected in the early stages, the treatment is quite easy for physicians and even patients as they are able to respond to the treatment. Based on the stage the cancer is, the treatment depends. One has to look for the stage of the cancer before going for the treatment. The main treatment types to cure gallbladder cancer are:
• Surgery: the cancer causing cells are completed removing by the surgical resection
• Chemotherapy: anti-cancer drugs are used to treat the cancer cells
• Radiotherapy: High-energy rays like x-rays are used to treat cancer cells
• Palliative therapy: used to relieve the symptoms along with other treatment to improve the quality of life.
The surgical resection completely cures the cancer, but has to follow up with your doctor regularly to remove the remains of any cancer cells present in the body. The follow up treatment includes the other therapies to cure the cancer in early stages.

Is gallbladder cancer curable?

Like many other cancers, the gallbladder cancer too is curable with earlier diagnosis. But if the detection of the cancer is beyond the treatable stage, it is not possible to treat the cancer. Unless the cancer cells spread to the blood vessels, it is curable.
Regular follow-ups to the physician and when you are more prone to the symptoms are the best ways to early diagnosis of the disease. This helps to cure the disease as early as possible without fear of the life of the patient.
