How diabetes affect man sex life?

Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, is a disease that occurs when your blood sugar level becomes too high. Increased level of glucose/ sugar in the blood give rise to many health problems. Although diabetes has no cure once cross border line and gets type 2 diabetes,but it could be treated for longer and you can somewhat manage your diabetes level yourself to stay healthy. 
Earlier, it was difficult for people to relate diabetes with sexual potency. However, the major culprit could be stress behind sexual health. Consequently, studies say that men with diabetes are more prone towards sexual inability due to anxiety. The studies of sexual health of men with diabetes has been done more in comparison to women.

However, people who have good control on their blood sugar level are less likely to suffer from severe sexual dysfunction. Here are the few points what men faces the issues regarding sexual health having diabetes:

Erectile dysfunction

The common problem for men who suffer from diabetes is erectile dysfunction. 
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of genital in males to maintain an erection required for sex. 
ED could be quite challenging and discouraging when you want your sex life on track and a baby to complete your family. 
Don't be reluctant to discuss your problem with the doctor. Further, he would consider the underlying causes and medications for the treatment. 
Improving your blood sugar level can prevent nerve and blood vessel damage which disrupts blood flow towards the penis. Early detection of disease could save a lot. 
In addition, frequent urination, hypertension, anxiety, stress and depression could worsen the condition of ED with diabetes. If you are suffering from these disorders, you should seek medical help with a Psychologist or mental health specialist. Your follow -up with diabetes doctor should be continued. 
Men suffering from Ed are more likely to suffer from heart diseases. According to the recent studies, when blood flow is decreased in the arteries of the penis, consequently, the blood flow in the arteries of the the heart reduces, further causing blockages and heart attack. 

Decreased Libido/ Sex drive

Men and women mostly experiences low libido or desire for sex due to poorly controlled diabetes. 
You need to move forward to take the steps to lower your blood glucose level. Consequently, your sex drive would be motivated.
Lack of sex desire is not only due to diabetes. Moreover, it's true that up to 50% of men may experience loss of sex drive as a result of diabetes.
Along with diabetes the reason for decreased libido include extreme fatigue, lack of energy, stress, anxiety, depression, harmonal changes and side effect of previous medications. 
Painful sex
Diabetes can cause Diabetic Neuropathy which is a type of nerve damage. In addition, it may cause numbness or pain in the genitals. During the painful situation it is difficult to stimulate feelings to inhibit sex.

Premature or delayed ejaculation


  1. Premature or delayed ejaculation both are forms of sexual dysfunction mainly effecting men with diabetes. It can result in anguish situation for both the man and his partner.
  2. If you are taking antidepressants or sleeping pills, the situation could be more distressed. Antidepressants like prozac, antipsychotics, medication for high blood pressure, diuretics could be the underlying causes of premature or delayed ejaculation in men with diabetes. 
  3. If a man takes 30 minutes or longer to ejaculate semen and each an orgasm, he is suffering from delayed ejaculation. However, most men experiences delayed ejaculation to some extent in their lives, but it could be a life long problem with diabetics.

Low testosterone level

Men with diabetes (type-ii) are more likely to have low testosterone level as men who don't have diabetes.
Researchers say low testosterone could be linked to insulin resistance and obesity. According to a study, when body mass index (BMI) increases, your testosterone level falls. In contrast, experts also noted that 25% men with type 2 diabetes and low testosterone were not obese. 
Diabetes can alter harmonal functions which may be a major factor for reduced testosterone levels. Reduced LH, accordingly with high blood glucose levels, can reduce testosterone harmones in the body. 
The symptoms of low testosterone may include change in sleep patterns, low libido, infertility, emotional changes, stress, decrease in strength, weight gain or behavioral changes. 
Experts say that insulin reduces your body's ability to make growth harmone, due to which you feel loss of sex drive.
Testosterone injections not necessarily increases your sex drive, it may cause low libido. Furthermore, they could cause headache, anxiety, male pattern baldness, feeling of numbness, pain or swelling when the medicine is injected.
Testosterone therapy should not be used as it give rise to many other undesirable results. Aging could also be a factor. You should consult your risk and benefits before using any medications with your doctor.

Self- image

1.Self-image could also be linked with your mental health, sex drive and of course, diabetes.

2.Self-image is nothing more than that how you feel about yourself. Also, self-esteem is important because feeling good about yourself can affect your overall health including diabetes.

3.During puberty, you often compare yourself with others. Always keep in mind that everyone is different. When you start taking insulin you may put on your weight which could have negative impacts on your sexual health.

4. Talk to your doctor. Most noteworthy, when your diabetes is well controlled, your body weight could come to track. Being active will do you good at all, from your weight to sex drive. 

5. If you are feeling too low to come close to your partner, discuss with your endocrinologist also.

Retrograde Ejaculation

1.During orgasm, semen emerges through the penis generally. But in Retrograde ejaculation, semen enters the bladder instead of going through the penis.

2. Although RE is rare, but it could be caused by diabetes. 

3. poor blood sugar control over a long period of time can cause nerve damage (neuropathy) of the bladder. 

4. If your nerve damage is sever, the condition of RE could be permanent.

5. Due to RE, very little or no semen is ejaculated leading to dry orgasm.

6. RE is not harmful but it can cause male infertility due to low sperm count. 

Treatment 

Consult your doctor as soon as possible and tell about your problem. Do an everyday workout for an active life,or whatever you feel good, keep the body active, the more the obesity increases in the body the problem will increase as well.
